Here is my first blog post:
I’ve tried fighting it. I’ve tried to ignore it. People have been telling me for years that I need to blog. But I would argue “Doesn’t everyone have a blog?” “I don’t have time. I’m already too busy.” Well, I’ll always be busy. That will never change. Anyway, many people have blogs….
But here’s the deal. I have a passion for educating people. When I did my first public talk many years ago, I was petrified. But what I discovered is that I LOVED it! I also volunteer each week at the local library’s genealogy room. That is my favorite part of the work week. I love to help people discover their ancestry. It is a wonderful experience to help someone come to that “Aha” moment. I want my blog to be a place where people come to learn the right way to do genealogy. I want to use my blog to share the stories of the people that I research, both my family and my clients’ families, assuming I have their permission. These stories and my teaching style are unique to me, so blogging finally makes sense to me.
Now that you know that I want to blog, who am I? I am Teresa Steinkamp McMillin, Certified Genealogist®. As the owner of Lind Street Research, I specialize in helping people find their German ancestors. I also research people who had ancestors in Chicago and other areas of the Midwest. I truly enjoy what I do. I am always busy with my client research and speaking engagements. I frequently speak for local, regional, and national genealogical events. In 2014, I published a book, the Guide to Hanover Military Records, 1514–1866 on Microfilm at the Family History Library. Ancestry Academy hosts two videos that I created and you might want to check out. One is German Genealogy: The Basics and The City Directory: Your Guide to the Past.
I am involved in volunteer activities. Currently, I am the webinar committee chair for the Board for Certification of Genealogists. I volunteer at the Arlington Heights Memorial Library every week, as mentioned earlier. I also serve as the webmaster for the Northwest Suburban Genealogy Society.
I am open to taking new clients related to my areas of expertise and I am currently booking speaking engagements for next year.
Thanks for reading my first blog post. Please leave questions and comments below. I look forward to getting to know you and to sharing my blog with you. Have an awesome day!
